Thoughtful Thursday: I'm Humbled to Accept That You Now Follow Me on Twitter...

Image
Do you ever have an "ultimate fan" moment? You know, the type of request on social media that just makes you feel a bit excited and very humbled and somewhat curious about why someone wants to connect with you? A retired music therapist (who isn't really all that retired, just on to different adventures around the world) just posted that she had such a moment, and I just had one, too! Now, this wasn't a huge thing, but it is a step closer to something that I really wanted to be part of, but wasn't nominated for - it was my own fault, really - I didn't let anyone know that I really wanted to be part of this big step for our professional organization, but I still really wanted to be remembered and part of this process. Maybe someday... Anyway, I went over to one of my social media accounts today and found that the Commission on Education and Clinical Training (I refuse to use the rest of the commission's title because I think we should be forward th...

My Path Forward...

All journeys take unexpected twists and turns. I have finished my first music therapy challenge of the new year. I'm thinking this may be something that I pursue more often as the challenges that I have completed have really helped me figure some things out. The problem with challenges is that they illustrate to me just how much I do not know about getting to my destinations, but they all have served to illuminate a new part of the path. (I'm still very much mired within my mind map concept, and I'll be working on making that map a reality later this morning - I took an important step this morning on getting some roadside assistance, as it were, so things will be moving!) I made some good decisions and progress on my journey this week. I know what I want to do, and I have visualized my end goal. I know what I want to do with my time, my energy, my attention, and my resources. I know what I want, and I am starting to figure out the way I'll be getting there. St...

Back Into the Routine

Oh. Yesterday was a day of group therapy, individual interactions, and trying to keep my mind going through lots of situations - real and imagined. I will be going into my office today with the goals of finishing my documentation (I have two groups and an individual to go) and setting up my session strategies for next week. Now, don't get me wrong. I LOVE working with interns! I do. Being an internship supervisor is the type of educational thing that I enjoy more than any other!! I am a big proponent of experiential learning and full immersion in topic areas, and clinical training is the way I can incorporate those education pedagogical constructs into the thing that I love more than anything else - actually doing music therapy! I know, each time I offer an internship position to an applicant, that there will be a time when I will have to remove myself from the role of therapist. I will have to spend lots of time in my office, still observing and monitoring, but my role w...

Rejection

I received my first presentation rejection letter for the season this week. It was for a Make and Take CMTE to be offered at AMTA. They never go for this type of session, but I think it would be something well attended. Oh well. I'll keep the idea for myself and figure out a way to offer this idea to interested music therapists in other venues. This is not the first time that I've experienced rejection - I've experienced rejection in school programs, in presentation proposals, in friendships. It seems to happen all the time. When one rejection happens, all the others come flooding back. It always takes me some cognitive reframing to remember that rejection is a completely normal way of life and that things will be fine. I experience rejection in my clinical life as well. Music therapy is not a service that my students choose. The way things are set up at my facility state that all students will attend music therapy every week. They have to arrive at my room, but I d...

Website Wednesday: Affirmation Sites

Image
It's been a week, hasn't it? No matter how you voted or who you rooted for, there are many things that have happened this week that need some extra thought and consideration. This country is due for some changes, and whether you think they are good changes or bad changes, we are all going to have to figure out how to work together in ways that we haven't had to consider for many many years. In situations like these, I really need some reminders about the value of a small gesture from a small person and how that can change the attitude and viewpoint of others, so I reach for websites that promote those ideas and values. Here are some of my favorite affirmation sites (please note, these are primarily meant to have some humor associated with them - not just serious thoughts). Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley - Here are some transcripts from Saturday Night Live simply because, " I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and, doggonit, people like me!" Th...
