The Music in Music Therapy

Last night, I had a chance to talk about one of my favorite music therapy topics to some of my favorite music therapists - interns! We talked about becoming more purposeful in how we use music in our therapy sessions. This is my favorite thing to ramble on and on and on about, and sometimes it leads to deep discussions about our therapeutic modality. Sometimes we just ponder what is going on as we think more deeply about what it is we do that makes us different from other musicians in our area, facility, or location. I have an ulterior motive for talking like this to music therapy interns. I think that many of us practiced veterans of the music therapy profession do not really know how to talk about music therapy to people who make funding decisions. I think this is why we are sometimes replaced by other music programs - we don't know how to delineate what we do that makes us different than the other musicians who interact with clients. This is so mething that we seem to stru...

I Went to the Movies

There used to be a song (so I'm told) that would play before the movie to encourage you to go out and get a treat at the concession stand. This song ran through my head for about two hours yesterday. I went to the movies yesterday - on a Tuesday night! I did. I'm stretching some of my comfort zones this summer - going out late, paying full price for a movie, and doing new things. So, I went to the movies last night to see Inside Out , the new Pixar movie! It was a deal that I learned about because I am fan of Pixar, and I follow all of their Facebook pages, so I am considered an "Insider." (Insert fan-girl squeal here!) In addition to the movie, I got to see lots of additional information and was given a lanyard with Bonus Points and access codes to more stuff and a lithograph of the movie poster. It was well worth the money that I spent (my sister thought it seemed expensive, but it was less than what I pay to see a musical, so it really wasn't all that ba...

Something Interesting - Brain.mic

My music therapy friend, Beth Schwartz , from Raising Harmony, posted an interesting link today. The link takes you to Brain.mic which is a collaborative link between GE and Mic. One of the elements of the page states that this is a one-month Spotlight Series that "explores the universe in our heads." The thing that drew me into the site was the "Map Your Mind Quiz." I found it absolutely fascinating - I even posted the results on Facebook (which I RARELY do with the quizzes that I take). The best part of the quiz, in my opinion, was that it displayed areas of the brain that were probably activated during the decision process. I thought that was particularly interesting. My result was "You are the child of Abraham da Vinci" implying that I have characteristics of both Abraham Lincoln and Leonardo da Vinci. How can I argue? I am looking forward to delving into the rest of the Brain.mic site. I've already found an article about the difference betw...
