Sunday Song: Fiona Apple - Criminal
One of the advantages of going through my CD collection and ripping music to my computer is that I am being reminded of music that I have loved over my life and career. One of these songs is by Fiona Apple who was part of the "angry girl singer-songwriter" movement that happened at some point in my past. Criminal is one of my favorites from Fiona Apple.
Okay, let me explain something about me.
I tend to find one song by an artist that resonates with me, and I then explore more of the music. I am not always impressed by the other songs that those artists share, but I have many CDs that I got because I wanted a copy of the one song that I love. I used to be part of a CD club - BMG got me many CDs for less than $2 each back when I was budgeting for everything - so I was able to find many of the songs that I loved back then for very little money. (I never really paid full price for any CD.)
So, with Fiona Apple, I have a couple of songs that I like and more that I do not like as much. I ended up with three of her CDs by the time my CD club closed down. I will listen a bit more this week to see what is going on with her music.
Back to the song, Criminal.
For some reason, back in the late 90's, I enjoyed the artists identified as "angry girl rockers." I think I found the messages of female empowerment supportive as I was working, figuring out how to support myself, struggling through grad school, and seeing clients who were oppressed in many ways. It was good to know that other people out there were going through similar experiences. I felt supported and my clients liked the music as well, so it was a good investment in my music therapy future.
Even now, I feel that having this music collection is still a good investment. (Yep, I am still old school when it comes to wanting to have physical copies of just about everything around me.) Once I get through some more of my CDs, I will start making "greatest hit" CDs again.
I have made "greatest hit" CDs for as long as I have been able to burn my own CDs. I never really made mix tapes, but I have made so many different types of CDs that it is laughable.
Criminal will be a song on a CD/playlist that I am going to call "Memories." It will include songs that carry memories of clients, circumstances, or just full out love for the music itself. Once I make the first one, I know that I will be ready for making more for my own use. The days of letting my clients use my CDs are pretty much over, but I do have about two who like to use the stereo for their leisure time, so never say never. I want to listen to more of my music during commutes this school year, so having CDs will be essential. I do not listen to commercial radio - I do not have control over the music, so I don't like to partake. I want to be able to select the music that fits my needs. That's what I do.
It is time to rip CDs, play games, watch the X-Files, and prepare for the upcoming work week. I need to get a watch to wear this week. My battery has died, and I do not have the ability to open up the back at the moment. I cannot change the battery until I can open up the back, but those tools are at work rather than here at home. I don't even know what battery I need to get until I can open the back.
Anyway, there is my Sunday plan. I have an online meeting in the afternoon, but I do plan on going out to do some light shopping in about two hours. I need celery, craisins, and almonds for a chicken salad recipe for sandwiches for this week's lunches. After a stroll around my local big box store, I will return home to make said sandwiches and prepare for this week.
Happy Sunday, all.
