Fun Friday - Well, I'm Skeptical...
Today is a professional development day where NOTHING that is being done will develop me professionally. How do I know this? I have been through 30 years of this pattern - I know. We will be hearing an update on the curriculum that we are trialing (not applicable to me as there is no music therapy element), and then will be going into a very-ABA formatted training on how to deliver KUDOS to staff members for doing their job. Ugh - it will include fidelity checks and rehearsals and things that I really don't need to hear, be present for, or practice. It is stupid and ridiculous, and we are not even given the actual KUDOS to pass out. We have to report our remarks to the supervisor of the staff member and they fill out the little slip of paper. It is a demeaning program all around, but we continue because there are some folks who believe that the only way to interact with people is the ABA way.
I disagree.
I have not been a fan of ABA since I was first introduced to it all in the early 1990s. I am more apt to incorporate elements of sensory integration into my sessions than I am to put in some ABA. I feel that ABA focuses on "fixing" people that are not broken. My philosophical outlook is more humanistic in nature.
After all the ridiculousness happening, we then have to head to the lake for a cookout. I am hoping for lots of rain to cancel all of this because I do not feel that it is appropriate to require us to leave our workplace. I do not do well in the sunshine or the out-of-doors, especially now during tree pollen season. I am not alone in feeling this way, as I heard at our staff meeting on Wednesday. I know that the sentiment behind it all is to give us something different and a nice experience, but I wish we didn't bother. I will not be able to eat much due to my response to the water in the town. It will be an uncomfortable situation no matter what happens. We will see about the rain. I know that the temperatures will be dropping so it will be colder then than it is now. Let's hope that people will change their minds...
I have an outer ear infection and went to the doctor yesterday. I cannot hear out of my left hand. This is also something fun to add to the list of things that will make me feel less happy to be present in the silliness of today.
Speaking of, I need to go. Sorry for the skepticism, but that's what is happening today...
