Just Sunday - No Synthesis Today

I haven't done any music therapy reading this week, so there is no synthesis in this week. (I almost typed an "I need to" statement here - there is no reason why I "need" to do something...) I would like to get back into the habit of reading something every evening. Maybe I'll start that again tonight. Maybe not. We shall see!

My favorite part of reading music therapy things is when something really makes me stop in my tracks and shakes up my idea of what music therapy is or could be. Often, those types of statements are those which go completely against my deep-held beliefs. I spend my time trying to figure out what I can take away from these new or contrary ideas. There isn't one "right way" to do music therapy. There really isn't, even though there are people who believe that there is only one "right way" to do music therapy. I am trying really hard not to be one of those people. I want to know what other people think and do in their own practices so I can continue to grow and develop as a music therapist. It is fine not to agree with everything that others aver as part of their practice, but it is crucial to acknowledge that everyone has the right and the responsibility to develop their own philosophy of music therapy and the right and responsibility to continue to expand their horizons.

Whew, that was kinda rant-like.

I have no excuse for that type of rant, but there it is. So, time to regroup.

This is my synthesis of why I continue to read and attempt to think through what I am reading. Ooh, a bit of synthesis snuck in there.

My last pattern of daily reading consisted of an hour of targeted readings on the sofa while watching television on Netflix. I have to make an effort to sit down and take the time to read rather than crawling into bed. I find a book, get a spiral-bound notebook and a good pen, and then I start to write. I take notes, and then I try to figure out what information has direct relevance to my music therapy life. At times, I cannot face music therapy theory or research, so I grab one of my songbooks and look at music. I try to come up with ideas for my therapeutic music experience (TME) file. My one rule about reading time? No computer! I have to separate from my electronic brain during that time, so I do!

This evening, from 6pm-7pm, I am going to sit down with a book, a spiral notebook, and a good pen, to read something about music therapy. I don't know what it will be, but I'll be back next Sunday to synthesize what I've read this week.

See you then!
