Sunday Songs
I subscribe to Dan Rather's Steady newsletter - the free version - because I respect that man as one of the voices of my childhood. Mr. Rather replaced Walter Cronkite as the anchor of CBS news when I was a kid. My parents were diehard CBS news watchers because of Mr. Cronkite, and Mr. Rather became the new voice for a long time before my parents defected to NBC news and Tom Brokaw. Since I grew up with several voices in the news world, I have found myself gravitating back to those voices to help me make sense of the world right now.
On Sundays, Mr. Rather takes a break from writing about politics and the state of the world to write about songs that he finds memorable. I like that, and I enjoy reading his words about those songs. I think I might start doing the same sort of thing on my blog - writing a bit about specific songs and why they are important to me.
Now, I just have to find the songs...
I was listening to songs that my clients were sharing this week, and I realized that I just did not have much new music in my life. I also don't have much old music in my life right now. I have turned away from music listening. I listen to music during work hours but not during leisure hours. Since I became a music therapist, the music listening that I used to do has diminished significantly from my pre-professional days. I would like to change this to include more music into my life. I need to figure out ways to do this and ways to turn off my analytical, therapeutic-focused brain when I am listening to music.
The problem? I don't know how to do that right now.
So, it is time to get back into listening and loving music just for what it is - beauty and not only a tool to be played with and manipulated.
I hope that I have a song to share. I will probably start with songs that I already love, so be prepared for some older music before I start to discover newer songs. If you have recommendations, then pop them into the comments section. I am always looking for something new!
For now, I want to figure out what song I want to talk about next week. It is time to get back into enjoying music without having to use that music as a tool for my job. See you next week, and I'm serious about song recommendations!!
