Prayer - Kinda Getting Spiritual - Read At Your Own Risk

Today is a rarity in summer school - it is a day off! Usually we get Fridays off, but today we get to celebrate the 4th of July on the 6th. I'm not sure how this happened, but I suspect the day came out of our fall break. I'm not going to question this too closely - I am just going to spend time on this day off, thinking about things that need to be offered into the universe.

In one of my roles in life, I am a church choir director. As part of that role, I am involved in a ministry that has become very important to me - the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Several of us participate, making shawls through crochet or knitting. We spend our time creating the shawls and intentionally praying for the anonymous recipient while we are engaged in creation. Once the shawls are complete, they go to church where they are blessed by the congregation. We then send them wherever they are needed.

The pictures here are of the prayer shawl that I received from this ministry when I was struggling with diverticulitis and was in the need of surgery. It went to the hospital with me and covered me during the entire recovery process. I keep it in my living room, and use it when I feel the need. I feel the need today.

I found that a high school friend lost his wife today. It was not unexpected, but it was on the same facebook feed as a post from my uncle who is struggling with the loss of his wife. I have friends who are caring for loved ones with serious illnesses and injuries. I have friends who do not know what to do with themselves right now. Many of my friends are struggling right now. I have lots of friends who need help with healing. I have friends who have chronic issues, friends with new situations coming up, and friends who just need an extra positive thought to spur them onto different things. The nice thing is that I have friends who are celebrating things in their lives as well - marriages, babies, new opportunities.

So, on my rare day off from being a music therapist, I am going to spend time involved in intentional prayer. I believe in the power of thought - I call it prayer. Others believe in noetics - as I understand the concept, it's a metaphysical philosophy - the idea that thoughts can have mass and an influence on the physical world (I am sure there is much more than that, but I am liking the idea of this form of philosophical thought... I need to delve more deeply into this concept...).

I will put my prayer shawl on, I will start another shawl, and I will pray. I will pray for those that I know need prayers, I will pray for those I do not know, and I will pray for specific situations that I know that strangers are experiencing. I will not pray that others feel the same way that I feel. I will pray for our society and for issues greater than what directly affects me.

If you are a person who is in need of positive thoughts for healing, support, encouragement, celebration, joy, or other, please know that there are people who are sending their thoughts your way. Take them into your own belief system and use them as you want. Send them back into the universe to others who can use them.

Thank you.
