One Step Forward, Many Times
Today is Monday and the 1st of May. Traditionally, this is the start of a strange period of time for me. I usually have some pretty weird things happen during the first three weeks of May. I'll not go into details here and now, but suffice it to say that this is always a time of turbulence in my life.
Anyway, I have finally accomplished something that I've wanted to do since I first purchased my website, many many years ago. I have released a newsletter. Right now, it's not that visually stimulating, but it will get better as I figure out what I want it to look like. I decided to make it a quarterly newsletter and to feature things already on my website.
(By the way, if you are interested, here's the link to the subscribe page.)
I also made another small step forward towards my dreams of having a course business for music therapists - I finished the first round of requested revisions on my pre-approved provider application for the Certification Board for Music Therapists. I am also spending time putting together the outlines and powerpoints for the course I want to launch this fall.
It is going slowly, but surely.
My work with clients is often this way as well - the perception that we aren't really going anywhere at all. We are, though. It is just taking us a long time to get to our end goals.
In music therapy school, such a very long time ago, we had a semester to see if there was improvement in our targeted goals. These days, the timeline is much less time pressured, but much more crucial for the benefit of clients. As a therapist in a multi-disciplinary treatment format, I have found that improvements in my particular part of treatment are not always reflected in other areas, but they indicate some improvement and opportunities for growth for my clients.
Some of my clients fully immerse themselves in all things music therapy treatment. Some of them need some encouragement. Yet others never really embrace music as a therapeutic medium. It is what they need, and I have to come to a place where I can accept their decisions about how and when to engage. Sometimes we take small steps together - sometimes they step away from me.
Lots of philosophical thoughts for this rainy, cold morning of May.
One step forward. And again. And again.
