Social Media Does Its Job

Today was a good day for social media and me. I usually get a bit irked at what people ask about on social media, but the posts today were very relevant to what I like to do and what I like to write about. There was one person who was asking about bullet journaling - I do that! There was another post about working with referrals that are simply "the client enjoys music." That happens to me as well. Lastly, there was an inquiry about what to do when you offer "educational enrichment services" for clients who don't really seem interested in music. I do that as well.

All of these posts gave me opportunities to think a bit more deeply about one of my favorite topics - how we do what we do.

I am fascinated by what others may think of as the daily minutiae. Those day-to-day tasks that affect us all, but that we don't really ever think about. My favorite articles in the music therapy literature are the ones from the very first music therapy journal where music therapists actually shared what they did all day. Since it was a new idea to have someone who worked as a music therapist in a variety of settings, therapists shared glimpses into what their days were. I still crave that type of information about you all, my fellow therapists.

This particular crop of posts indicated that the things I struggle with are not only my struggles. After all my years, I actually have some strategies that I've worked out for my way of doing music therapy that others may want to try. Maybe not. (I also have a new list of ideas of what to blog about on the days [like I've had lately] where I can't find anything to write about...)

This is the reason that I review social media daily. I find that it simultaneously challenges and frustrates me. Today was a challenging day - in a good way.

So, what did I respond? I spoke about thinking of my services as a pyramid. I spoke about contacting someone about their issues. I also shared my bullet journal process. I felt part of the community and felt like I had something to offer to others. What a great way to end this frustrating couple of weeks - and the frustration WILL end!

Today is preparation day. I'm going to spend some time cleaning stuff, some time planning stuff, and some time engaged in other stuff. I may get to spend some time engaged in peer supervision, but I may not - my peer was absent yesterday and there is a particularly nasty little bug going around work right now. She may be gone again today. Oh, and I am EXTREMELY behind in most of my notes, so I will have to do that before I can leave tonight.

My session strategies for next week will include some of the things that I had planned on doing this week - conducting, playing percussion instruments, engaging in some sound play games. Almost half the week is already planned! Hooray! There will be another Musician of the Month clue revealed. (So far, Janice, the clues are as follows: 1)Irish performer; and 2) Inspired by Phil Spector to become a Choir of One.) I don't have lots that is defined about my Fridays, but I always have things that I "should" do. I think I will introduce the concept of centers to my older students next week with a choice between drum set assembly and something else that I haven't delineated yet.

I am going to spend a bit more time looking over my social media feeds to see if there is anything else out there that will challenge my thought processes.

Happy Friday!
