Favorite Things Friday: New Projects
Yesterday, I found out that my surgery has to be postponed since I am still symptomatic with pneumonia, so I am facing an entire year of light duty. I am unable to do individual sessions because I cannot guarantee that I can do what I need to do to keep my clients safe. So, I am doing three hours of music therapy per day, Monday through Thursday, and no therapy on Fridays. I am basically spending much of my time actively seeking something to do. You can only rearrange your cabinets so much before the ennui sets in. I can tell you, my ennui is not only set in, but taking over everything!
I spoke to the Assistant Principal yesterday about the change in my surgery dates and my need for something to do. She started to give me some projects. She's very good at having tasks that need to be done that she cannot do because she's doing all that assistant principaling.
I now have two new tasks. I am providing support to the STARS store (a place where students can purchase things using their "good behavior" STARS points). I have a new Friday afternoon task! I am also going to develop some online training modules for staff members to complete for their training hours. The two modules are blood-borne pathogens and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). I'm also working on a reinforcement program for staff members centered around PBIS all on my own.
For me, the chance to solve problems is one of the most inspiring tasks I can have. I get to do things my way and figure out how to do them efficiently as well as in a way that makes sense to me. I also get to help others do their jobs more efficiently. This makes me happy and feeling a sense of purpose in my job again.
It is important to find what makes you happy. Having something to do that is not related to me or my lack of ability to do things helps me to feel needed, purposeful, and necessary. Sitting at my desk, rearranging the cabinets I can reach, and staring at the walls is not something I do well. Solving problems, that I do well!
If you are the type of person who thrives on solving problems, start looking for one. You can solve it for the rest of us!!
Happy Friday.
