TME Tuesday - On A Roll Game

Today's TME is a lyric game. There isn't much to it, but there is lots of fun to be had during the experience, especially if you have a group that likes to sing or loves music lyrics.

As always, comments and requests are welcome! Enjoy!!

Purpose: To assess awareness of song lyrics; to address sustained attention to task; short-term memory; long-term memory; motor skills – upper extremity gross motor; hand-eye coordination; social interaction

Materials: Ball; OPTIONAL: lyric sheets or songbooks

Environment: Group members arranged in a circle, sitting on the floor

Procedure: R = Reinforcement opportunities; C = Redirection/Cue opportunities; A = Assessment
  1. Start game by stating that we cannot repeat song lyrics – each group member has to come up with a new lyric to offer.
  2. Roll ball to group member.
  3. A – wait for group member to say part of a song.
  4. C – if client is unable to name a song lyric, provide cues such as, “what are the words?”
  5. R – reinforce correct responses
  6. Repeat until clients show signs/symptoms of boredom (e.g., giggling, staring off into space, repeating things said by others, etc.), or until time runs out

Therapeutic Function of Music: In this case, music has an auxiliary role in that the music itself is not the end goal, it is just the method used to increase nonmusical goals.

Adaptations:
  • Use song names, performer names, different types of music, etc.
  • Write or provide song books or lyric sheets for group members to browse through to find song lyrics for the game

Extensions:
  • Start a familiar song – next person has to continue the song lyrics. Each person builds on the song until the song is ended
  • Use familiar songs, but each group member only adds one word to the song. Continue until the song is complete.
