Wednesday: Ugh,

Well, at the moment, I do not like Tuesdays off from work for holidays. It will be interesting to see what my Wednesday group members act like with a day off from the structure of school in the middle part of the week. I have forgotten to do some tasks that I needed to do and done others that I did not need to get done right now. It has been a strange week, to be sure.

I can't blame the Tuesday off for my scattered thoughts. That's all me. I was scattered before this time and am scattered right now. Lots of fun to be had with menopausal brain function, let me tell you!

Anyway, I am sitting here after a scattered sleep night waiting to take a shower and get ready to go to work. Apparently, there were northern lights happening last night - I tossed and turned through them without knowing what was going on out there. I did have the fleeting thought that I should go outside more, but I was already in my pjs, so I didn't. Obviously, I should have gone outside, even in the cold night air. I missed yet another chance to see the aurora.

Today I get to see my Mon/Wed groups again after missing my Tues/Thurs groups yesterday. It is difficult to keep up when you miss an entire day for some groups but not for all groups. So, what do I keep out of the rotation for my Tues/Thurs groups? What do they miss that the Mon/Wed groups will get? This happens more frequently with my Mon/Wed groups than with the Tues/Thurs groups because most of our federal holidays happen on Mondays. I'm not sure why this one was not on a Monday.

It is my job to go in and do my job now. We are working on musical symbol recognition by matching. I am also insisting that clients predict how many cards they will go through before they find their symbol. My first group today will not be able to do this type of processing, so I will have them just find their cards rather than making predictions. I need to write that TME into my compendium - I don't think I've done that yet.

I did some dishes, a bit of laundry, and read a book yesterday. It was a good day off. I won't say I'm ready to go to work, but I am resigned to the idea and will make it the best day I can make it. I get paid on Friday, so I can get my budget squared away for the month. My bank does a thing where it tells me if I am staying within my budget. Unfortunately, it works from the beginning of the month rather than when I get paid in the middle of the month. So, I am currently running a deficit (as far as my bank is concerned), but I am within my personal budget. I will be back in the black as soon as my deposit happens on Friday. Hooray!

Time to get going on my day. It started off rough, but I am hoping that it will not stay that way. It should be warm at the end of the day instead of wintery like it was on Monday. Welcome to Autumn weather in my state! See you tomorrow, maybe.

Songwriting Sunday: Client Goals First and Foremost

When I am writing music, I tend to do one of two things. I either start with a specific client in mind and write for that client's goals and objectives, or I start with an idea and let the idea grow regardless of the clients that I am serving at the time. I spend time with lots of hypothetical clients - thinking about the vast number of clients and their unique goals as I develop songs and therapeutic music experiences (TMEs). Today, though, I would like to start with the first focus - that of a specific client and his or her or their goals. Currently, I am sharing a wall with a class of students who are experiencing lots of life and school changes. Two students have transferred from residential care to home care and are now day students. One student is brand new to the classroom. Another student recently left the class. Dear AMTA

Dear American Music Therapy Association: I am debating long and hard about remaining in this relationship. I have been in this relationship since college, and this is not a decision that I am taking lightly or without great cost.  I am not happy with what you are bringing to this relationship. Now, I have been a selfish partner over the past several years - mainly because I am not feeling like we share a common mission anymore. It is easy for me to place the blame on you, but I know that this is not all on me. I have tried to be invested in communication and support and understanding, but everyone comes to a time where enough is enough.
