Fun Friday: Professional Development

It is the Music for Kiddos symposium day! I am at home, sitting in front of my computer in my pjs, and getting ready for a day of learning. I do not have to go to work today, so I am taking a leisurely morning.

I will have 11 hours of continuing education to get through by the end of today. That's lots of time to sit in front of the computer, so I might not watch everything today. I prefer watching things live, but if my body cannot handle it, then my body cannot handle it. It is always nice when there is an opportunity to watch via recording later on.

I wonder if I can get my little laptop to stream while I use my big computer for working on other tasks...

Ideally, I would be able to watch the symposium on my television, but I haven't figured out how to screencast things to my older televisions. I know that there has to be a way, but I have started this a bit too late to figure it out right now. A quick search of my Roku has identified some screen mirroring apps, but they require use of my phone. I'm not going to do my phone that way.

I will get my book for notes and find a way to get comfortable. I have about 90 minutes before everything gets started, so it is time to figure all this out.

Time for professional development! Let's hope it will have some direct effect on what I want to do with my life from here on out.

I have not attended a conference for about a year now. The last one I went to was the Midwestern Region of AMTA in Lincoln, NE. The conference itself was not all that exciting or stimulating when it came to my own interests in music therapy. I am at an age where everything is new again, and it is somewhat disconcerting to hear new therapists "discovering" things that I was taught many years ago. I get frustrated when we do not acknowledge the history of our profession and have to find out information over and over again.

Ah well. It is time to start preparing for the symposium. I have made a grocery order for tomorrow morning, and I currently need to get food and symposium snacks started before everything else happens.

Songwriting Sunday: Client Goals First and Foremost

When I am writing music, I tend to do one of two things. I either start with a specific client in mind and write for that client's goals and objectives, or I start with an idea and let the idea grow regardless of the clients that I am serving at the time. I spend time with lots of hypothetical clients - thinking about the vast number of clients and their unique goals as I develop songs and therapeutic music experiences (TMEs). Today, though, I would like to start with the first focus - that of a specific client and his or her or their goals. Currently, I am sharing a wall with a class of students who are experiencing lots of life and school changes. Two students have transferred from residential care to home care and are now day students. One student is brand new to the classroom. Another student recently left the class. All of these changes have shifted the dynamics in the classroom group, and old behaviors of concern have reemerged as well as finding new behaviors to contribute. ...

Dear AMTA

Dear American Music Therapy Association: I am debating long and hard about remaining in this relationship. I have been in this relationship since college, and this is not a decision that I am taking lightly or without great cost.  I am not happy with what you are bringing to this relationship. Now, I have been a selfish partner over the past several years - mainly because I am not feeling like we share a common mission anymore. It is easy for me to place the blame on you, but I know that this is not all on me. I have tried to be invested in communication and support and understanding, but everyone comes to a time where enough is enough. I am trying very hard to decide if the benefits that you provide to me are worth the feelings that I have about where I think you and I are going.
