I am finally accomplishing something that I have been working on for a very long time.

Isn't it interesting when you finally take a gulp and do the thing that has been on your to-do list for years??

Let me explain...

For years, I have been offering webinars and networking with music therapy students and interns. One of the recurring themes that has happened over the years is that interns are not well-prepared for the experience prior to applying to internships. There are some folks who are surprised by the fact that they have to do an internship. There are others who feel overwhelmed by the entire experience from application to graduation.

I don't think that any music therapy student should start looking for an internship without a foundation of knowledge about the process and the experience itself. So, I am writing an internship handbook to help students understand what is going on in this process.

I released the first chapter, Becoming a Music Therapy Intern: Finding Your Internship, last weekend, and I am working on the second part of this handbook. I have plans for many more chapters, and I hope to continue to offer this information for many weeks and months in the near future with revisions as appropriate for the long-range future. This entire thing comes from my interest and continued fascination with how we, as music therapists, actually accomplish our job requirements. I love procedure, so it makes sense to me to try to help others understand why we have to do what we have to, especially when it comes to another passion of mine - the internship.

I was talking to a music therapy student yesterday. This student is heading into the last year before internship and asked to shadow me for a day. I am always willing to do this when asked because I did not see an actual, certified music therapist do music therapy until I started my internship, and I wanted to see this process happen. So, I share what I do with others when asked.

Anyway, we were talking a bit about finding an internship (I took the opportunity for a plug for the chapter that I just released), and we chatted a bit about why this process tends to be such a mystery for students. I want to demystify this process for students because I think it is ridiculous that students are not knowledgeable about this part of their education. The problem is that not many people hear about my webinars and resources!!

So, if you are a music therapy student or a music therapy educator, would you do me a favor and comment? I would love to know who sees these posts and how you found me. This will help me figure out where people find me, and how to strengthen my marketing strategies.

If you are so inclined, you can use the link above to see a preview of Chapter One to get an idea of what we are talking about here...
