Nearing the End...and the Beginning

I have three days left of my Fall Break before we start the Fall semester at my facility. As I have said before, the beginning of the school year is the time that I tend to make (and keep) most of my New Year's Resolutions. This year is no different.

The beginning of the school year has always been a good time for me. I was one of those kids who loved school and got bored over the summer without the stimulation of classes. I never quit learning, even during the summer, but the difference in routine always affected me.

My mother, wise woman, never let us watch television during the summer months. We were outside. We would go to Girl Scout camps (day camps and overnights). We always helped out at Vacation Bible School. We made many trips to the library to participate in summer reading programs. We would go to the evening concerts in Memorial Park. We would ride our bikes around and around the cul-de-sac. We traveled the length of our big back yards playing Little House on the Prairie and Oregon Trail. The neighborhood kids would gather at our house to go on adventures with us.

Through it all, I would get to the place where I wanted to go back to school.

For me, the best time of year was when it was time to walk to school and see the classroom assignments for the year. We would find out which teacher we had about 4 days before school started. We'd go get some school supplies (nothing like the long lists of today), and we'd go shoe shopping. My family has strange feet, so shoe shopping always took way too long, and we could only go to one store in the mall that carried the clunky, wide shoes that fit our feet. We always had new clothes to wear on that first day to go along with our new shoes.

The first day of school, we would gather outside for the picture. Mom always took one of each of us on the first day. Then, we'd head to school.

The beginning of the school year is a time that has always included anticipation and excitement for me. It is no different as an adult!

I do not have a new outfit to wear - staff members wear uniforms now. I do have some new shoes to break in, but they are not as clunky as the others (thank goodness!). I have resisted as much of the school supply sales as I have been able to resist (school supplies are one of my downfalls). I have not bought a single folder or notebook this season. (Maybe I should buy some to take with me to church - we are probably setting up school kits this month. Hmmm. That might be a gateway event - may not be the best idea.) I did buy some Crayons, some erasers, and some sheet protectors; these are things that I need throughout the year, so why not buy them when they are the least expensive? (Uh-oh, I can feel the justification trying to take over... Must resist.)

The focus on the beginning of this school year leads me into making my resolutions.

In the 2017-2018 school year, I would like to do the following:
  • finish two CMTE courses
  • eat better
  • find daily happiness
  • learn to really play the ukulele
  • offer meaningful music therapy services to my clients
The end of my Fall Break means the beginning of the school year. I think I am ready for both. Three more days.

  1. How can you have fall break in the summer?! And don't forget pens. And maybe some paper clips.
